Praise to the way these rieslings develop over time. By law they shouldn’t be released until after five years’ bottle age.”

"Like the brittle, crystalline 2019 vintage, this 2020 is another lean, mean, feisty Eden Valley Riesling and it is pithy, raspingly dry and in need of time, perhaps a year or two, to sufficiently mellow and soften. The talc-y, chalky texture is mouth-watering and the acidity is abrupt and confrontational, too. The piercingly fresh lime juice theme is invigorating and its ultra-clean outlook manages to fleetingly banish memories of the awful, raging bush fires which devastated hundreds of vineyards in South Australia. This is a wine which cleanses the palate and the mind and it is a fine beacon of hope that we can look forward to drinking some superb wines from this exceptionally challenging vintage. 18+/20 "
"Pale green gold. Fragrant camomile lime, lemon grass aromas with hints of ginger. Fresh sweet lemon curd, grapefruit, lime squash, flavours, fine looseknit powdery textures, attractive mid-palate richness and crunchy long acidity. Spectacular Eden Valley Riesling with beautiful aromatic complexity, richness of flavour and mineral length. Should age for the long term. A beautiful pure-fruited and mineral textured Eden Valley Riesling. Despite the challenging bushfires of 2020 in the Adelaide Hills (further south), the 2020 Bin 51 highlights an outstanding growing season for riesling in this region. A brilliant wine - 98 points"
Very pale straw with lime green hues
Aromatics instantly propelled from glass – white florals, star fruit, lemon sherbet, green lime and lime pith.
Definitively Eden Valley – convincingly confirmed by subtle Meyer lemon blossom wafting above classic Eden Valley
bath salts and talc.
Fresh and vibrant. Inviting. Engaging.
An initial breadth of flavor (freshly squeezed lime and other citrus derivatives) – yet structurally remaining tightly defined.
Round and generous. Soft (lacy) acidity conveys fruit, adding persistence, length.
Great drinkability and great balance. Deceptively powerful. All augers well …
Eden Valley experienced plentiful winter rainfall, with average falls leading into spring. However, the following summer and autumn were very dry, with well below average rainfall. Spring and early summer were dry, hot and windy, which impacted final yields, however reduced disease pressure during the growing season. From January, the season became cooler than average with a low number of days over 35°C, near perfect ripening conditions, with cool nights and mild days. Riesling was harvested in the early hours of the mornings, with overnight temperatures clutching 5-10°C, allowing for greater acid retention and flavour development. Harvest commenced on February 19th and concluded on February 26th. Overall, a relatively small but high-quality crop of Eden Valley riesling.

Bin 51 was created in the 1990s as part of the evolving Penfolds white wine development program. The first vintage in 1999 was labelled Eden Valley Reserve Bin Riesling. The evolution of Penfolds Bin 51 Eden Valley Riesling opens another chapter in a long history of Penfolds involvement in winemaking from this variety.
