Bin 8 was first made in 2003 and is a modern exemplar of Penfolds multi-regional and multi-varietal blending philosophy. Ripe, balanced fruit flavours are supported by softly integrated oak resulting in an impressive, smooth red wine. It was introduced in response to a heightened interest in shiraz and cabernet sauvignon blends, a classic Australian wine style that Penfolds has championed in various guises since the 1960s. Our Bin numbers were originally derived from the maturation cellar location after bottling. However, Bin 8 was anointed its designation because it uses older oak previously employed to craft Bin 128, Bin 28 and Bin 389 with the number 8 providing the common thread.

Plum purple core, purple rim.
Icing sugar, cocoa powder, chinotto, freshly sliced fillet of beef, brooding dark fruits, olive tapenade, red miso, baking spices.
Shiraz richness meets cabernet structure, medium bodied, balanced and rounded/complete. Red fruits coming to the fore, cherry, plumb. Contemporary, approachable. Mouthcoating, savoury, velvety tannins.
South Australia experienced the second consecutive year of winter drought. Spring was cool and dry, conditions that continued well into November delaying flowering and fruit-set. With root-zone moisture levels well below average, irrigation was vital. The 2019 calendar year was the driest on record in the Barossa Valley. The beginning of summer was marked by a state-wide heatwave. Conditions in January and February provided some welcome relief, with cooler conditions and some welcome rain, which ensured the vines were able to finish the remainder of the season off well. While bunch weights and berry numbers were low across the major growing regions, the harvest produced some outstanding parcels of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon with strong varietal characteristics.

Although Bin numbers were originally named after the original Bin location after bottling, Bin 8 was given its number because it uses older oak previously used for Bin 128, Bin 28 and Bin 389 – with ‘8’ obviously providing the common thread.
