Penfolds

Bin 9

Drinking well now, but will improve with time. Peak drinking window now - 2022.

Taste Description

Colour
Medium-red.

Nose
Bright and fresh blue fruits, and a varietal giveaway of black olive.
A waft of spice/herb… curry leaf/tomato leaf, dill and fennel seed.
Red liquorice and camphor (compliments of the oak?) complete the package.

Palate
Medium-bodied
High-toned and racy, with non-Cabernet-like tannins!
Yellow-bean paste, tomato paste and cassis flavours confirm the Cabernet DNA, nicely supported by cedary oak.

Origin: Multi-regional blend, South Australia. From McLaren Vale, Wrattonbully, Barossa Valley, and Coonawarra.

Maturation: 12 months in French Oak (10% new) and seasoned American Oak.

Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vintage Conditions

Above-average winter and early spring rainfall offered the vines in South Australia healthy soil moisture profiles for the growing season. Late spring and early summer were dry and warm with significant heat records being set. Warm weather prevailed during summer and throughout veraison, allowing grapes to develop evenly and with good intensity.

These warm conditions came to an abrupt halt in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale in mid-February with a significant rainfall allowing for long slow ripening of the fruit in very good ripening conditions. Wrattonbully had a warm and generally dry ripening end to the season allowing for the development of strong varietal flavours.

Decades of investment in new vineyards across the best wine regions of South Australia afforded the Penfolds winemaking team the opportunity to craft a new wine, designated Bin 9. The first vintage was made at the Penfolds Nuriootpa winery in 2012.

Bin 9 can be enjoyed in the full flush of youth or cellared for the medium-term. A hallmark of the Bin wines is their ability to gain something extra with the passage of time.
