CLIMATE Cool to temperate, with significant cooling influence from the Southern Ocean.
LOCATION Coonawarra, Limestone Coast - far south of South Australia.
SOILS Terra rossa – friable, vivid red clay loams over well-drained limestone subsoil.
RAINFALL Average rainfall is around 593 mm (23 in). About 210 mm (8 in) falls during growing season.
IRRIGATION Supplementary irrigation is provided.
VITICULTURE Vines are trained on high, single wire trellis with an overhead sprinkler system for use in combating frost.
GRAPE VARIETIES Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.
FRUIT PROFILE This vineyard contributes fruit to Grange, Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon, Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz and special Bin Series wines - Bin 60A Coonawarra Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz and Bin 620 Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz.

Penfolds first acquired Sharam’s Block from Redman’s in 1960. It now comprises 100 hectares (247 acres) of prime vineyards. Our 1962 Bin 60A Cabernet Sauvignon, 1964 Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon, 1966 Bin 620 Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz and 1967 Bin 7 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Kalimna Shiraz began an important Penfolds tradition in Coonawarra. Old Penfolds blocks include the revered Block 20 Cabernet Sauvignon and Block 14 Shiraz.
