Koonunga Hill

2018 Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet

Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet is very much a reflection of the Penfolds winemaking style and philosophy. Sourced from premium vineyards across South Australia, the wine is known for its full-flavored style with excellent shiraz and cabernet fruit, firm yet well-rounded structure and balanced oak. Made as a traditional 'Australian blend', the shiraz component provides fleshy fruit flavor while cabernet provides a frame of fine grained tannins.

This wine is imported from Australia. State import laws allow us to ship this wine to the following states: AK, CA, DC, FL, MA, MN, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NM, NV, OR, SC, TN, WV, and WI.

Dried rosemary and sage give the wine a sense of earthiness.
Fine, elegant tannins which frame and capture fruit depth providing length and balance.

Vintage Notes

Plentiful winter rainfall offered the grapevines across South Australia healthy soil moisture profiles in the lead up to the growing season. Spring was quite cool, initially slowing down vine growth. Temperatures gradually warmed in October with vines producing large canopies, little irrigation was required. Growers had to work hard to control vigor and crop size. Vintage was delayed by up to a month in some regions. Harvest was generally dry favoring fully ripened grapes with well-developed colors and flavors.

Viticulture & Winemaking

Peter Gago - Chief Winemaker

Peter joined the winemaking team in 1989, initially in the craftsmanship of sparkling wines, before moving on to reds as Penfolds Red Wine Maker. In 2002 Peter became the fourth ever Chief Winemaker for Penfolds. Together with his fellow winemakers, Peter’s careful custodianship has ensured that Grange and the other ‘older’ members of the Penfolds family, have continued to set the benchmark for their style and quality, while new additions to the range push the boundaries ever wider.
