Cellar Reserve

Cellar Reserve Tempranillo 2015

Penfolds Cellar Reserve wines are alternative, limited release wines that explore the innovative boundaries of viticulture, vinification and style.

Cellar Reserve Tempranillo is sourced exclusively from McLaren Vale and is a unique Australian expression of this Spanish grape variety. Displaying typical fruit characteristics of berries, liquorice, spice and nectar, extended maturation in seasoned French oak has added great complexity to the palate.

When To Drink

Drinking well now, but will improve with time. Peak drinking window now - 2024.

Taste Description

Vibrant red.

Scents of tea-smoked duck.  Meaty, gamey, glazed.
Intriguingly, wafts of stone-fruited nectar aromatically set apart from a dollop of chocolate/raspberry (venison) sauce.
No oak to speak of...

At once, rich & expansive, long, round and glossy.
An amalgam of red fruits and varietal spices.
Ripe, polished tannins – a flash of graphite; a suggestion of knife sharpening -stone/oil.

Technical Information

Origin: McLaren Vale, South Australia.

Maturation: 16 months in seasoned French oak barriques.

Variety: Tempranillo.

Vintage Conditions

Autumn and winter rainfall were well below the long-term average. Record low rainfall was recorded in September to March, with temperatures in spring significantly warmer when compared to the long-term average. These climatic conditions brought about another early start to the season. During early summer, average temperatures dipped to below the long-term average levels.

First Vintaged in 2007.

“A release that will continue to extol the virtues of this variety and its McLaren Vale stronghold.”
