Decades of investment in new vineyards across the best wine regions of South Australia has afforded Penfolds the opportunity introduce a new Cabernet in its 170th year, designated Bin 9.

Released in March as part of the 2014 Bin Series launch, the inaugural 2012 Bin 9 Cabernet Sauvignon is a versatile wine that can be enjoyed in the full flush of youth or cellared for later enjoyment. The tightly structured and focused Cabernet shows characteristics of dark fruits and chocolate, with a seamless synergy of ripe and bold flavours including roasted and cured meats and spicy chorizo.

The 2012 Bin 9 Cabernet Sauvignon highlights the art of multi-regional blending, yet it is more contemporary in style compared to the celebrated Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon and Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine contains fruit sourced from vineyards across South Australia with a significant portion sourced from the ancient soils of McLaren Vale, and spent 12 months in French and American oak hogsheads.

Bin 9 is similar to the Bin 2 Shiraz Mourvèdre and Bin 8 Cabernet Shiraz, also released as part of the 2014 Bin Series, in that they are all made to be enjoyed in their youth. Nonetheless as is the hallmark of the Penfolds Bin Series, each wine will yield further layers of complexity with the passage of time.

No stranger to the Penfolds Bin Series portfolio, the multi-district Bin 2 Shiraz Mourvèdre was first released in 1960 and is a wine steeped in nineteenth-century tradition. The 2012 vintage is a medium-bodied, textbook example of a modern-era Penfolds Bin 2, with savoury and charcuterie flavours charmingly meshing with Jamaican raisined dark chocolate. The blend of Shiraz and Mourvèdre is still relatively uncommon in Australian table wines yet it is greatly valued by winemakers for its blending attributes, adding complexity and palate grip.

For those who prefer Cabernet Shiraz, Bin 8 is another classic introductory wine to the Bin Series. Penfolds first introduced Bin 8 in 2003 in response to an interest in Cabernet Shiraz blends - a classic Australian wine style that has caught the attention of the international wine media. Comprising 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 43% Shiraz, the 2012 expression is fresh, vivacious and silky smooth, with ripe black fruits, plenty of richness and supple velvety tannins supported by softly integrated oak.

Together with nine other illustrious wines, Bin 9, Bin 2 and Bin 8 form part of the 2014 Penfolds Bin Series, the heartland of the Penfolds brand. The Bin Series, as we know it today, was first created by former Chief Winemaker Max Schubert and named after the numbered "bins" within the Penfolds cellar, where the wines were stored. With the ambition to create "a dynasty of wines" which all had an unmistakeable resemblance to each other, the Bin Series offers superior quality, accessibility and choice.

The 2014 Bin Series displays the benefits of the multi-regional blending and highly stylised winemaking philosophy, which Penfolds has upheld since 1844. Each of these wines are now available at fine wine stores internationally, the Penfolds Cellar Doors and from (Australian visitors only). To view the tasting notes, visit the links below:
