Penfolds Autumn Riesling 2018 bottle

Koonunga Hill

Koonunga Hill Autumn Riesling 2018

In the early 1970s legendary winemaker Max Schubert began the quest for a range of white wines that would equal the already famous red wines of Penfolds. One of the first wines from these trials was named Autumn Riesling. Some of Penfolds’ finest riesling parcels in the early 1970s were bottled under this label and the Koonunga Hill Autumn Riesling acknowledges the original 1972 vintage by closely adhering to the original packaging with a fitting 'retro' label.

The wine pays further homage to the original through being specially crafted to develop further with bottle age. A fine talc acid structure gives great length of flavour and 'linearity' to this wine and the small addition of traminer makes it a truly unique offering.

Vintage Conditions

Above average winter rainfall in Eden Valley provided good soil moisture profiles leading into spring. Drier conditions prevailed from September through to April which was significantly lower than the long-term average.

Spring provided ideal conditions for flowering and fruit set, while the growing season experienced some warm spells, with twelve summer days recorded above 35°C. Healthy canopies shielded the grapes from adversity, and with careful use of supplementary irrigation the grapes were able to ripen evenly across blocks. The 2018 vintage quality was exceptional, with lovely varietal flavour and refreshing natural acidity.

History
First vintaged in 2008.

The origins of Koonunga Hill Autumn Riesling are steeped in post-war innovation and experimentation.  The development of late-picked, dry-riesling styles during the 1960s established the reputation of Eden Valley and Clare Valley as premium South Australian wine regions.

Ahead of its time, the original 1971 Autumn Riesling was sealed with screwcaps to preserve freshness and longevity.
