2008 Tasting Notes

The Thomas Hyland range honours the pioneering spirit of Thomas Hyland, son-in-law of Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold, whose stewardship of the company from the late 1800s until 1914 saw the development of Australia's most famous name in wine.

Sourcing fruit from premium viticultural districts of South Australia known for producing varietal Cabernet fruit, this Thomas Hyland Cabernet Sauvignon offers a contemporary expression of varietal flavour and structure.

The Penfolds Thomas Hyland red wines, comprising a shiraz and a cabernet sauvignon, are house style wines based on multi-regional fruit. These are fresh, early-drinking wines with abundant richness and chocolaty tannins.

The Thomas Hyland Cabernet Sauvignon is a shining example of the benefits of multi-regional blending. Cabernet sauvignon from the southeast of South Australia, including Coonawarra, often features prominently, bringing perfume and generosity of flavour on the palate; while the addition of ripe, powerful McLaren Vale fruit and elegantly proportioned Robe cabernet enhance the overall style.

The classic varietal elements of ripe blackcurrant/cedar aromas and fine-grained tannins are also present, to produce a wine with a firm, yet supple structure, subtle oak character and rich depth.

While Penfolds Thomas Hyland Cabernet Sauvignon is made for relatively early drinking, the overall fruit concentration and firm tannin structure will allow the wine to cellar for the medium term.
