The Coonawarra Claret is an Australian blend of Shiraz and Cabernet, proudly and symbolically adorned with a name that for Australian winemaking is no more.

In the 50th anniversary year of the release of Penfolds St Henri an opportunity arose to pay homage to the ‘Claret’ style made famous by two great Auldana Winery winemakers, Leon Edmund Mazure (1860 – 1939) and John Davoren (1915 – 1991).

From September 2011 new labelling laws prohibited the use of the Claret moniker on Australian wine labels. Claret is a term that pulls at the heart strings of many Australian consumers with the nostalgic link to yesteryear, evoking memories of consumers’ introduction to dry table wine.

The magnum’s front label is an adaption of an original Auldana label, from an era prior to the winery purchase by Penfolds in 1943.  A very real Australian blend of Shiraz and Cabernet, proudly and symbolically adorned with a label and a name that is no more.
