2011 Tasting Notes

Penfolds Rawson's Retreat wines present classic single-varietal and varietal blends in an approachable, fresh-flavoured style. Drawing on Penfolds' extensive vineyard resources, the wines offer a first-rate quality and value guarantee, presenting the drinker with an affordable taste of everyday Australian wine at its best.

Launched in 1995, Rawson's Retreat is the introductory level for Penfolds wines. The name Rawson's Retreat is an informal reference to the stone cottage built in 1845 by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold at the famous Magill vineyard in Adelaide, where - with wife Mary and daughter Georgina - he had settled the year before and was to soon establish the Penfolds winery, which still operates today.

Rawsons Retreat Shiraz Cabernet is sourced from premium shiraz and cabernet sauvignon grapes grown throughout southeast Australia.

The winemaking team spend time in the vineyards prior to vintage to work with the viticulturists to ensure the right style of grapes are picked for this wine. The desired fruit profile that the winemaking team look for is one of lovely primary fruit characters with some spice characters as well as skin and seed tannins for palate definition.

Once the fruit has been delivered to the winery, the winemakers ensure that the up front fruit and spice characters are maintained and further enhanced and complexed with oak fermentation and maturation characters, adding a subtle spice and toast to the finished wine.

This classic Australian shiraz cabernet blend is best matched to grilled meat and vegetable dishes.
