2007 Tasting Notes

Penfolds Koonunga Hill has established itself as one of Australia's favourite names in premium red wine. Since the first vintage in 1976 of Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet, the collection's reputation has been built upon its quality, value and consistency.

The Koonunga Hill Cabernet Merlot has  successfully built upon this tradition, offering  Cabernet's up-front dark fruit flavour and lengthy finish, while Merlot's juicy plum fruit fills out the  midpalate to create a seamless wine from start to finish.

The Penfolds time honoured tradition of blending is shown to great effect with this perfectly poised wine, which takes two quality components to create a perfectly seamless whole. The characteristic structure of cabernet is draped with the gentle fleshiness of merlot, resulting in a brilliantly balanced blend.

Koonunga Hill Cabernet Merlot is a multi-district blend, drawing fruit from several vineyards in South Australia including McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Langhorne Creek and Coonawarra. It is a full-flavoured, fruit driven wine, in contrast to the maturation style of the shiraz cabernet.

To fully appreciate the fruit characters and the fine grained tannins, the Koonunga Hill Cabernet Merlot is best treated as an early drinking wine, although can be carefully cellared for two years.
