Tasting Notes

In 1844 Christopher Rawson Penfold planted vines on the slopes of Magill to produce fortified wines. Penfolds is now proud to present a range of fortified wines that is a continuation of over 150 years of winemaking tradition and represents the finest collection of wines of this style in Australia.

Since 1985 Penfolds has been identifying the best barrels of Club Tawny and reserving them for additional maturation. These reserved barrels are then skilfully blended to create Penfolds Club Reserve, a definitive aged Australian Tawny in keeping with the Penfolds tradition of excellence.

Vinification takes place in small stainless steel fermenters, with each style component batched. During fermentation the wine is regularly pumped over to extract colour and flavour. Fortification takes place towards the middle stages of fermentation which results in a fruit and sugar sweetness, a common element within the range of Penfolds Tawnies.

The Club and Grandfather styles are treated differently after fortification. Pressings of varying percentages are added to the early drinking Club styles to further add structure and balance. While each of the Tawnies in the range differs in concentration, richness and complexity, there is a continuity of house style based on rich, full-bodied fruit.
