2008 Tasting Notes

The Penfolds Cellar Reserve wines came about in the mid 1990s as Penfolds Winemakers experimented in the Magill Estate  Cellars with small batches of wines from varieties not traditionally associated with Penfolds.

These wines are handmade, in small parcels, using innovative techniques that enhance the varietal and textural characters.

A vibrantly aromatic wine with a fine linear structure from the Eden Valley.

Sourced from Penfolds’ Woodbury vineyard high in the Eden Valley, from carefully hand-pruned vines that yield intensely flavoured fruit, this stunning wine is re-shaping the public perception of traminer.

A vibrantly aromatic wine with a fine linear structure, traminer has struggled to attain the status of other mainstay grape varieties in Australia. In fact this Alsatian variety has been relatively unsuccessful until recent times. However it’s Penfolds’ view that older vines, better vineyard management and more intuitive winemaking are now contributing to a much more polished product.

James Halliday has noted that in the context of Australia, the Cellar Reserve Eden Valley Traminer is a “particularly successful traminer style.” He preferred the 2006 with its “rose petal/lychee fruit and citrus acidity” while Joshua Greene was impressed by “the complex and exuberant 2007.”

Overall, the Cellar Reserve Eden Valley Traminer is an early drinking wine that is best consumed soon after release.
