The Penfolds Cellar Reserve labels are based on special vineyards and micro-sites, new varieties and innovative vinification practices. They represent a personal approach to winemaking and are handcrafted, small batch wines made with plenty of love and attention.

The Penfolds Cellar Reserve Pinot Gris has been labelled under the Adelaide appellation, named after South Australia's capital city. This area encompasses the surrounding winegrowing regions, including the Mount Lofty Ranges and the Barossa.

Pinot Gris enjoys its finest expression in France’s Alsace region, and to a lesser extent Germany, where it’s found in stunning full-bodied, mouthfilling wines with residual sugar. Pinot Grigio, the Italian variant, is a drier, lighter style, with little colour or aroma.

Pinot Gris has only recently been developed as a varietal in Australia, enjoying great success in locations such as the Adelaide Hills, Mornington Peninsula and Tasmania. Two distinctively different styles of pinot gris can be produced from these regions; however the common element will always be an attractive minerality that adds great complexity.

The Penfolds Cellar Reserve Pinot Gris is sourced from the Eden Valley and the Adelaide Hills. These sub-regions enjoy a relatively high altitude and a cooler climate, allowing pinot gris to reach full ripeness, while still retaining attractive mineral acidity.
