2005 Tasting Notes

The tradition of innovation and experimentation is central to the Penfolds winemaking philosophy and is perpetuated in the form of Penfolds Cellar Reserve wines. These sometimes one-off releases emerge periodically when experimental wines, which have been  nurtured carefully in the winery cellars, are deemed appropriate for public release.

The wines do not necessarily fit into any particular genre and provide Penfolds winemakers with the freedom to strive for new styles and definitions of excellence in their expression.

This classic Australia wine is a blend of Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon and Barossa Valley shiraz.

Penfolds Cellar Reserve Cabernets do not necessarily fit to any particular genre and in many respects the winemaking process involved is a voyage of discovery.

The Cellar Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz is a blend of Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon and Barossa Valley shiraz. This is a classic Australian wine style, with the components fermented separately, blended and matured in new oak.

The 1993 Penfolds Cabernet Shiraz was the first of the Cellar Reserve line and is perhaps the most Penfolds in style. Joshua Greene was “blown away by the standard of the wines. The 1993 is an ultra-typical Penfolds – built on tannin and oak – with really appealing, up-front maturity with real depth of flavour.”

James Halliday described the 2005 Cellar Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet Kalimna Shiraz as “a voluptuous and seductive near-Special Bin wine with cascades of cassis/blackberry fruit and high-quality tannin and oak.”
