2006 Tasting Notes

The tradition of innovation and experimentation is central to the Penfolds winemaking philosophy and is perpetuated in the form of Penfolds Cellar Reserve wines. These sometimes one-off releases emerge periodically when experimental wines, which have been nurtured carefully in the winery cellars, are deemed appropriate for public release.

Barossa Valley sourced, fermented and matured in French oak. It promises many years of cellaring potential.

Wines from the Penfolds Cellar Reserve range are all effectively experimental wines, with varying vinification and maturation practices. Without the expectations of making a wine to a house style, winemakers are allowed to play with the fruit and make something that is a little different.

The Penfolds Cellar Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced exclusively from Penfolds’ Barossa Valley vineyards, including the famous Kalimna Block 42. Fermented and matured in French oak, this wine promises many years of cellaring potential.

Huon Hooke had this to say about the 2005 Cellar Reserve Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon: “It’s a cracker with wonderful fragrance. It has a strong, chocolate, vanilla oak-marked nose. The palate is deep and firm, young and vigorous, with great depth, fleshiness, concentration and drive.”

The 2005 and 2006 comprise Block 42 and Block 41 material – often used for the Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon.
