2011 Tasting Notes

The Barossa Valley was planted extensively with Shiraz, Mourvedre and Grenache by the early settlers. In the 1950s Penfolds started experimenting with blending Shiraz and the robust grape variety Mourvedre.

In response to a growing international market for the highly perfumed wines of the Southern Rhone, Penfolds introduced the 1992 vintage of the Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz Grenache Mourvedre.

A complex blend, Bin 138 sits quite apart from any other wine in the Penfolds portfolio.

Vintage conditions and ultimately the nature of the fruit are the elements that determine the final blend. Hence each year the varietal make-up can vary. In some vintages shiraz will lead the blend, in others grenache will be the principal element.

Unusually for Penfolds, all three varieties are matured independently, owing to their tendency to mature at different times on the vine and the need to mature under different conditions in the barrel.

Mourvèdre will often contribute a unique combination of violet-like floral notes and a range of earthy, savoury complexities. Structurally it can be lean and sinewy, providing a worthy frame upon which shiraz and grenache can sit. Grenache is typically lighter in colour and body, presenting the perfume of the wine and is often the first component noticed when the wine is poured. Shiraz provides the body and shape of the wine.

Bin 138 is more of a fruit-driven style than the other Bin wines and displays a chalkier tannin texture. Its rich, earthy nature becomes more nuanced with age.

There is an arsenal of special release 2008 reds lurking in the Penfolds cellar as testimony to one of the most legendary vintages this decade. For now, you’d have to take my word for this, if it weren’t for the sneak preview that this wine offers. Peter Gago names this the best 138 he’s ever made. “I have a real soft spot for ’96, ’98 and ’02 when Grenache was so good, but in ’08 all three varieties were good!” he exclaimed. This is a spicy, fruit-laden wine with juicy layers of rhubarb, stewed plum, black jube and berry fruit compote. The tannin structure of Mourvèdre and some time in old oak provide a tightness and definition to its otherwise soft, supple tannins. This is the one Penfolds Bin red that you can shamelessly hoe into right away!
