Kalimna Vineyard

In 1945, Penfolds purchased the highly significant Kalimna Vineyard. Originally planted to vines around 1888 by George Swan Fowler, prior to that the land was used as a source of redwood for D and J Fowler Ltd, the family’s fruit preserving company. George Fowler named the vineyard Kalimna, which means ‘pleasant view’ in a local Aboriginal language.

The vineyard lies on gently undulating slopes with elevations as high as 340 metres. Located at the northern end of the Barossa Valley about 4 kilometres north of Nuriootpa, the Kalimna vineyard represents an important part of Australian wine heritage.

Cool sea breezes from the Gulf of St Vincent and elevation modify temperatures. However, hot northerly winds can occasionally dominate, creating considerable vine stress.
The region is also known for its relatively low rainfall. Average rainfall is 508mm; 201mm during growing season.

Deep and sandy to sandy loams and heavy, red-brown clays.

Most blocks are mechanically pruned and harvested.
Some blocks, particularly Block 42 which comprises century-old bush vines, are hand-picked.
