Penfolds enjoys a strong international following - from wine collectors and wine lovers, to wine media and wine show judges. Its reputation has been well-recognised over its 165 year history and spans the entire array of wines produced, as well as the winemaking teams.
The accolades for Penfolds Grange have spearheaded Penfolds wine media and wine show success. 1955 Grange won more than 50 gold medals before its retirement from the show arena in the late 1970s. Grange as a wine style has been referred to as "one of the only true First Growths of the Southern Hemisphere" by English writer Hugh Johnson.
The Penfolds Chardonnay portfolio has also enjoyed remarkable wine show success in the past few years. The 2008 Penfolds Thomas Hyland Cool Climate Chardonnay won The J.B. MacMahon Trophy for Best White Wine under $20 at the 2009 Royal Adelaide Wine Show; 2005 Yattarna was awarded the 2008 George Mackey Memorial Trophy for Australia's Export Wine of the Year and four consecutive vintages of Penfolds Reserve Bin A Chardonnay won 11 trophies at three Australian wine shows on the same day in 2009.
