It’s high and cold in Tumbarumba, you can see all the way to the summit of Kosciusko, and that’s a clue to why some of New South Wale’s finest Chardonnays are at home here. When I visited last year to taste them all, Bin 311 was the standout and the 2009 is the most nervy yet. It’s as pristine as falling snow, as fresh as a mountain stream and strung together with pure lemon fruit and zesty minerality. The theme here is all about fruit rather than oak, although Peter Gago admits that five percent new oak snuck in somehow. “I’m not sure how it got there,” he said. “We must have hoped that parcel would make it into Yattarna!”
