There is an arsenal of special release 2008 reds lurking in the Penfolds cellar as testimony to one of the most legendary vintages this decade. For now, you’d have to take my word for this, if it weren’t for the sneak preview that this wine offers. Peter Gago names this the best 138 he’s ever made. “I have a real soft spot for ’96, ’98 and ’02 when Grenache was so good, but in ’08 all three varieties were good!” he exclaimed. This is a spicy, fruit-laden wine with juicy layers of rhubarb, stewed plum, black jube and berry fruit compote. The tannin structure of Mourvèdre and some time in old oak provide a tightness and definition to its otherwise soft, supple tannins. This is the one Penfolds Bin red that you can shamelessly hoe into right away!
